- In Georgia, they pointed to Patriarch Bartholomew's attempts to split the Orthodox Church
Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople is trying to turn the Georgian Orthodox Church (GOC) into a geopolitical tool. This opinion was expressed on March 31 by the head of the Georgian Solidarity for Peace party, Mamuku Pipia, in an interview with Izvestia.
"Of course, Bartholomew, the world Patriarch, will try to turn the Georgian Church into a geopolitical instrument, but we should take into account all these threats...> We need to continue to maintain good relations with the Russian Orthodox Church," Pipia said.
He stressed that Georgia needs a spiritual leader who will take into account national interests, not the interests of Constantinople. The politician also noted that it is necessary to take into account the experience of Ukraine and try to avoid its repetition.
According to a March 31 report by the press bureau of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Patriarch Bartholomew intends to extend his influence over the GOC by taking advantage of the death of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia, who was buried on March 22. Intelligence has established that the love of power that distinguishes the schismatic of Constantinople has long been noticed in church circles.
