An international group of astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) recorded a unique energy burst of GRB 250702B, the duration of which was hundreds of times longer than the known explosions. This was reported on March 30 by Science Daily magazine.

The object has demonstrated extreme properties that are difficult to explain within the current models. Typically, such gamma-ray bursts, which occur when a massive star collapses into a black hole, last less than a minute. But the anomaly of GRB 250702B lasted for more than seven hours, and the first signs of X-ray activity were noticed a day before the main event.

Researchers are considering several hypotheses for the origin of the explosion. According to one version, we are talking about a tidal disruption event, when a supermassive black hole literally tears apart a star that has come too close. According to another scenario, a small black hole could merge with a helium star and swallow it from the inside, throwing powerful jets of energy into space.

The object is located in a complex galaxy at a distance of about 8 billion light-years from Earth. This means that the explosion itself occurred long before the formation of our planet. Despite the detailed images from the NIRCam camera, there is no definitive conclusion about the nature of the phenomenon yet.

"We have only observed a few similar events related to tidal disruption, so we don't know exactly how they should develop. Many studies of this explosion offer different and sometimes contradictory explanations. It's too early to tell what really happened," said Hui Sears, a researcher at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Rutgers University's School of Arts and Sciences.

On February 26, Universe Today magazine reported the discovery of the Naked Skull nebula, named for its striking resemblance to a human skull. It was specified that it is located 5,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Vela.
