A second foreign language in the school curriculum can expand the educational opportunities of students, but it requires a balanced approach to the distribution of academic workload. Alexander Tolmachev, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Youth Policy, told Izvestia on March 31.

According to the deputy, learning two foreign languages promotes the development of memory, flexibility of thinking, creativity and communication skills. In addition, it broadens the horizons of schoolchildren by getting to know the culture of other countries and can be an advantage when applying to universities and building a career.

"If a child and his family have expressed a desire to add a second foreign language to the educational program and the school has the necessary conditions for organizing classes, there will be no sharp increase in workload, the introduction of a second language should not become stressful for children. As a rule, a second language is introduced gradually, from one lesson per week, and then the number of hours can be increased depending on the curriculum," the deputy noted.

At the same time, the deputy drew attention to the fact that learning two languages at once is not suitable for all schoolchildren and should depend on their educational goals. According to him, the key issue remains the redistribution of study hours without prejudice to other disciplines.

On the same day, information appeared in the media that the Ministry of Education allegedly plans to make a second foreign language compulsory for all high school students.

Later, the Ministry of Education denied reports about the mandatory study of a third language. The department noted that a second foreign language can be studied at the choice of students based on the application of the children themselves or their parents (legal representatives) and if the necessary conditions are available in the educational organization.
