- Scientists have identified a high level of fatigue in children with intestinal diseases
Severe fatigue is extremely common among children with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and the symptom persists even in the absence of active inflammation. This was reported by Medical Xpress magazine on March 30.
A group of scientists led by Dr. Rafael Martin-Masota from the Regional University Hospital of Malaga in Spain analyzed the condition of 382 patients aged 10 to 17 years. Specialists from 37 medical institutions participated in the study. Among the participants, 61.1% suffered from Crohn's disease, while the rest suffered from ulcerative colitis.
The researchers found that 81.1% of patients complain of constant fatigue. It is noteworthy that among children in clinical remission, the rate was 77.5%. According to the data obtained, severe fatigue is more common in girls, older patients, as well as in the active phase of the disease or following a strict diet.
"Our results, as well as data from previous studies, show that a significant proportion of patients continue to experience fatigue even during periods of clinical remission," the authors said.
Scientists emphasize that the long-term persistence of this symptom indicates the complex nature of the disease. In their opinion, fatigue in IBD is caused not only by inflammatory processes, but also by a combination of physiological, psychological and behavioral factors.
The analysis showed that chronic fatigue is directly correlated with lower quality of life indicators. In Crohn's disease, the strongest negative impact was recorded in the social sphere, whereas in ulcerative colitis, patients were more likely to report emotional and physical difficulties.
On March 23, Medical Xpress reported on the association of fruit and vegetable consumption with a reduced risk of Crohn's disease. According to the publication, in particular, the combined consumption of foods such as apples, pears, bananas, mushrooms, onions and garlic was associated with a decrease in the likelihood of developing the disease.
