Olympic champion in the Russian national handball team Koksharov has died.
Olympic champion in the Russian national handball team Eduard Koksharov died at the age of 51. This was announced on March 31 on the page of the BCG "Meshkov Brest" in the social network VKontakte.
The athlete became one of the most decorated handball players in the history of the country. As a member of the Russian national team, he won the Olympic gold medal in 2000 and the bronze in 2004. He also won gold and silver at the World Championships, as well as a silver medal at the European championships.
At the club level, Koksharov became Slovenian champion eight times with Celje (Slovenia) and won the Champions League in 2004. Playing for the Chekhov Bears, he won the Russian championship twice. Eduard Koksharov remains the only handball player who scored more than a thousand goals for the national team: in 226 matches, he scored 1,110 goals.
The specialist started his coaching career at SKIF Krasnodar. Since 2016, he has worked in North Macedonia, where he served as the sports director of the Vardar club, and also served as the head coach of the men's and women's teams. Under his leadership, the men's team from Skopje won the Champions League twice. In the period from 2017 to 2020, Koksharov headed the Russian men's national team.
In July 2022, the coach became the head of the Rostov-Don women's club, and in March 2023 he began working at the Brest BGC. Together with the Belarusian team, he won the championship, Cup and Super Cup of the country.
