For two weeks, the command of the 33rd Separate Assault Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) misled the relatives of the deceased Ukrainian soldiers, claiming that the village of Sopych in the Sumy region remains under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, although in fact the settlement came under the control of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. This was announced on March 31 by a source in the Russian law enforcement agencies.

"The obituaries of the Ukrainian <military> confirm the destruction of the reserves of the 2nd battalion of the 33rd separate assault regiment deployed to this sector of the front to capture the village of Sopych," the source said in an interview with TASS.

The relatives of the victims, who received false assurances from the command, now complain about the days-long deception, which was revealed only two weeks after the actual loss of the village.

On March 23, sources provided information that more than 10 soldiers of the 33rd separate Assault Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine went missing in the village of Sopych, Sumy region, during an attempt to retake positions.

On March 17, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the military groups of troops "North", having liberated the village of Sopych in the Sumy region, had cleared more than 300 buildings and basements there. It was noted that during the offensive, the assault units were assisted by artillery, striking enemy strongholds.
