"Another nuance that is rarely discussed is that a glass of grapefruit juice contains quite a lot of natural sugars, and there is almost no fiber in it. One glass of juice can contain up to 20-25 grams of sugar. Therefore, it is better not to drink juice on an empty stomach and not to use it as a substitute for water," Gusakova warned in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

"Grapefruit contains substances called furanocoumarins, which block the enzyme CYP3A4. This enzyme participates in the metabolism of many drugs. When a person drinks medications with grapefruit juice, the drug breaks down more slowly and its concentration in the blood increases, which increases the side effects," the specialist explained, adding that this is especially important for statins, hypertension medications, some sedatives, antiarrhythmic drugs and immunosuppressants.
Gusakova added that grapefruit is also able to slow down the metabolism of caffeine. As a result, some people may experience heart palpitations, anxiety, and a feeling of overexcitation after combining coffee and grapefruit.
