The NYT has learned about the growth of U.S. residents who are not seeking to marry
The number of single people and young people who do not want to get married is growing in the United States. This was reported on March 29 by The New York Times (NYT).
"Currently, there is a consensus among researchers that after many years of steady decline in the marriage rate, this institution has lost its appeal to many," the article says.
According to the Pew Research Center, in 2019, the marriage rate in the United States reached a 140-year low and has not fully recovered. In December 2025, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that 47% of American households are married couples. At the same time, 50 years ago this figure was 66%.
According to the newspaper, currently some couples choose cohabitation instead of the official registration of marriage. Also, some American women seek to marry, but cannot find a suitable partner.
Ekaterina Krikunova, a psychology teacher and medical psychologist, said on March 27 that before getting married, it is important for partners to discuss financial issues, everyday life, relationships with relatives and plans for children, as differences in these areas most often cause conflicts. According to the expert, one of the most controversial topics is precisely the distribution of finances.
