On March 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin applauded a girl from the Republic of Dagestan, Sura Shakhmardanova, who read a poem about the unity of the peoples of the Russian Federation via video link at the grand opening of the renovated Azerbaijan State Music and Drama Theater in Derbent.
"The Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia — wow! As soon as the president announced his decree, a great country is celebrating everywhere. The traditions of our ancestors resound over a vast country, and every nation keeps its voice alive. Here, songs and dances fly like the sound of springs, and friendship is stronger than swords and bayonets," Shakhmardanova recited.
On March 27, Putin said that relations between Russia and Azerbaijan are based on a solid foundation of a common historical past and cultural heritage. He also expressed gratitude to the Azerbaijani leadership for the support of the Russian Drama Theater, which was opened more than 100 years ago. The Russian President noted that the scenes in Baku and Derbent serve as bridges connecting the cultures of the two countries.
