More than 60% of Russians regularly engage in sports
62.6% of Russian residents are systematically engaged in physical activity and sports. Such data is provided in the materials of the state program "Sport of Russia", which has been implemented since 2025 and is aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and developing sports infrastructure throughout the country.
"On behalf of Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, the Russian Sports state program has acquired the status of a comprehensive one. It includes 19 main indicators. The key factor is the proportion of citizens who regularly engage in sports. In 2025, we reached the level of 62.6% for the first time, exceeding the plan by almost 3%. The level of provision with sports facilities was 64%, and the satisfaction of citizens with conditions for sports was 65.2%," said Mikhail Degtyarev, Minister of Sports and Chairman of the Russian Federation's ROC.
According to the minister, in 2025, more than 13,500 sporting events were held in Russia, including international competitions and nationwide mass events. Adaptive sports were also developing at a high pace, and special events were organized for the participants.
"In 2025, the construction of 22 capital sports facilities was completed, 119 smart playgrounds were built and 370 sets of equipment for TRP sites were supplied, and 295 Olympic reserve schools and 22 sports organizations in the new regions received new equipment. For the first time, 26 regions received subsidies for the overhaul of 44 sports facilities," Degtyarev said.
The Russian Sports Minister highlighted the Zemsky Trainer program, which was launched in 2025 in a pilot mode. The first 74 coaches who moved and signed a 5-year contract to work in sparsely populated areas received payments under it. "Since this year, the program has been launched in all regions, except for cities of federal significance," Degtyarev emphasized.
Among the key objectives of the state program is to ensure the accessibility of sports and promote physical activity among the younger generation. Today, there are over 38.5 thousand school sports clubs in the country, and more than 24 million children, including from low-income families, are involved in sports.
The share of people with disabilities involved in adaptive sports has reached 26%. The development of the appropriate infrastructure allows them to create comfortable conditions for classes and socialization. On the basis of sports institutions, classes are held for veterans of the military. According to the Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation, more than 130 physical education and sports events took place in 2025 alone, including the Defenders of the Fatherland Cups in 50 regions.
To keep themselves in good physical shape, many people spend their free time in gyms. The state encourages such an initiative by providing a tax deduction of up to 19.5 thousand rubles per year from the funds spent on physical education and recreation. This year, the list of organizations that qualify for such a deduction will double.
According to the state program, the Ready for Labor and Defense (TRP) complex, revived in 2014, is being developed. Last year, more than 3 million people decided to pass sports standards, over 460 thousand of them received insignia. In just over 12 years, about 11 million Russians have tested their strength in more than 2.5 thousand testing centers across the country.
