Easter, or the Bright Resurrection of Christ, is one of the most important Christian holidays. The date of the celebration changes annually and depends on the lunar-solar calendar, in 2026 it falls on April 12. Traditionally, believers paint eggs and bake cakes for the holiday. When to prepare and consecrate Easter treats — in the material of Izvestia.

Why do they eat Easter cakes and paint eggs?

The prototype of the modern cake was artos, a special sacred cylindrical bread with a seal in the form of a cross. According to legend, the resurrected Jesus appeared to the apostles during their meal, after which they began to put bread intended for the Son of God on the table. Artos was prepared in church and monastery bakeries, held at the altar throughout Holy Week, and then cut into pieces and distributed to parishioners.

Later, Easter bread was baked at home so as not to lose touch with tradition. However, homemade cakes are similar to artos only in shape, the ingredients that were added to the dough of the products were different. Ghee, cream and eggs were added to a homemade cake, and artos was made only from flour, water, yeast and salt.

The tradition of painting eggs and giving them to each other at Easter is associated with a follower of Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene. According to legend, she presented the Roman Emperor Tiberius with an egg with the words: "Christ is Risen!" to announce the miracle of the Resurrection. However, the ruler did not believe the girl, saying that it was as impossible as turning a white egg red. At the same moment, the egg in his hands turned red, becoming a symbol of the authenticity of Maria's words.

When to bake cakes and paint eggs for Easter in 2026

Traditionally, Orthodox Christians begin to paint eggs and bake Easter cakes on the fourth day of Holy Week, which is popularly called Maundy Thursday. In 2026, it falls on April 9th.

According to the Gospel, on this day, Jesus gathered his disciples in the Upper Room of Zion in Jerusalem to share with them the Last Supper, his last meal before suffering on the cross.

At this meeting, the Savior washed the apostles' feet, demonstrating an example of true humility and service to one's neighbor, and established one of the main sacraments of the Christian Church — the Eucharist, or Holy Communion. During the supper, Jesus shared bread and a cup of wine with the disciples. The actions of the Son of God made it clear to his disciples that the sacrifice he would make would be voluntary and saving.
