On the eve of Easter, in the Orthodox tradition, special attention is paid to Maundy Thursday, the day of purification and preparation for the holiday. In 2026, the event falls on April 9th. It is also associated with one of the most famous folk practices — the preparation of Thursday salt. What is this custom, what is its meaning and how to prepare such salt correctly — in the material of Izvestia.

What is Thursday salt and what is its meaning?

Thursday salt is one of the most famous elements of the folk Orthodox tradition associated with the preparation for Easter. We are talking about specially prepared salt, which has long been harvested on Holy Thursday of Holy Week, a day symbolizing purification and spiritual renewal.

In the historical and cultural tradition, this product is perceived not just as a seasoning, but as a symbol of faith and protection. In Christian symbolism, salt is associated with the ideas of purity, wisdom and eternity, and the process of its preparation is associated with the inner purification of a person before Easter.

Today, interest in Thursday salt persists as an element of folk culture and family customs. Despite the fact that the church emphasizes that this is not a magical rite, but rather a tradition, many continue to prepare it annually, following established practices.

How to make Thursday salt and what it is needed for

Thursday salt is ordinary table salt that has undergone special processing, most often calcination with the addition of flour, bread or herbs. As a result, it darkens and acquires a characteristic black color, which is why it is also called black or passion salt.

The tradition of its use has its roots in ancient Russian culture. It was believed that such salt has special properties: it protects the house, brings well-being and helps to maintain health.

In practice, Thursday salt was used quite widely. It was added to food, used in everyday life, stored next to icons or carried with them as a talisman. At the same time, in the modern interpretation, experts note that it is more about symbolic meaning than about real healing properties.

When is Thursday salt prepared

The key condition for the preparation of Thursday salt is strict observance of time. It is done once a year — on the night of Wednesday to Thursday of Holy Week or on the morning of Maundy Thursday.

The choice of date is related to the religious meaning of that day. Maundy Thursday in Orthodoxy is dedicated to the memory of the Last Supper and symbolizes purification, both physical and spiritual. That is why any actions performed on this day are traditionally given a special meaning.

In popular beliefs, it was believed that salt prepared on this day is "charged" with a special power and is able to protect the home and family throughout the year.

How to make Thursday salt at home: a step-by-step method

Traditionally, Thursday salt was prepared in a Russian oven, but today more affordable methods are used — on the stove or in the oven.

One of the most common recipes involves several steps. First, they take coarse rock salt and mix it with rye flour or bread, sometimes herbs are added, such as mint, wormwood or sage.

Then the mixture is poured into a dry frying pan and heated over low heat, stirring constantly. During cooking, the salt gradually darkens — this is the main sign of readiness.

In the old days, the process was accompanied by prayer, which emphasized the spiritual nature of the action. After calcination, the salt is cooled and, if necessary, crushed to a convenient consistency.

An alternative method is baking in the oven, which mimics a traditional oven. In this case, the mixture is also brought to darkening, after which it is used for its intended purpose.

How to use Thursday's salt correctly and where to store it

After cooking, Thursday salt is traditionally stored in the house throughout the year. It is placed in cloth bags, wooden salt shakers, or kept next to icons.

The use of salt can be both domestic and symbolic. It is added to food, especially in festive dishes at Easter, and is also used in various folk customs, for example, to protect the house or as a sign of well—being.

At the same time, church representatives emphasize that it is not necessary to attribute magical properties to salt. The main meaning of the tradition is to remind of spiritual purification, faith and preparation for the main Christian holiday.

Thus, Thursday salt remains an important element of cultural heritage, combining religious meanings and folk customs. For some, it is part of a family tradition, for others it is a symbol of Easter and inner renewal, but in any case, its meaning goes far beyond the usual seasoning.
