Beglov reported on the liquidation of more than 240 landfills in St. Petersburg

In St. Petersburg, 246 unauthorized landfills were eliminated during the year, reducing their total number in the city by almost three times. This was announced by the governor of the city, Alexander Beglov, speaking at the plenary session of the international forum "Ecology of the Big City".

The meeting was devoted to the topic "Proactive strategy: in search of drivers for accelerated environmental development." Andrey Yatskin, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council, and Alexander Drozdenko, Governor of the Leningrad Region, also participated in the discussion.

"The President of Russia has identified environmental well-being as one of the national development goals. For St. Petersburg, with our unique ecosystem, it is a duty to future generations," Beglov emphasized. He noted that in St. Petersburg, for the first time, a "green budget" was formed, which provided for more than 370 billion rubles for solving environmental problems.

Beglov stressed that St. Petersburg retains its leadership in the country in the collection of hazardous waste. So, in 2025, 1,332 tons were collected — twice as much as a year earlier.

The mayor recalled that within the framework of the program "10 priorities for the development of St. Petersburg" the number of specially protected natural areas has increased. The city is implementing a comprehensive recovery plan for the Suzdal Lakes, and similar measures are being developed for the Sestroretsk Spill and Dudergof lakes. Also in St. Petersburg, the clearing of riverbeds and drains continues.

Beglov highlighted emissions from vehicles into the atmosphere among the key environmental challenges. He pointed out that St. Petersburg is increasing its fleet of electric and gas-powered vehicles, developing incentive measures for the transition to electric transport and actively creating the appropriate infrastructure.

The International Big City Ecology Forum is the largest convention and exhibition event in the North-West of Russia in the field of environmental protection and environmental safety. It is held in St. Petersburg annually in the penultimate week of March.
