Tomatoes with South American moth identified in the Krasnoyarsk Territory
A shipment of infected tomatoes weighing more than 1.35 thousand kg was found in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The vegetables were imported from China, the press service of the regional Rosselkhoznadzor administration reported on Tuesday, March 24.
Earlier, the cargo arrived at the Agroterminal-Customs temporary storage warehouse, where it was subjected to phytosanitary control. During the inspection, the inspectors found fruits with signs of damage by a quarantine pest.
Tomato samples were sent to the laboratory for research, writes KrasnoyarskMedia news agency. As a result, a quarantine pest, the South American tomato moth, was found in the vegetables.
The person who imported the dangerous products was notified of the need to take action against the infected batch. At the choice of the owner, the vegetables were treated with drugs that are safe for humans.
The South American tomato moth (Latin Tuta absoluta) is a dangerous quarantine pest that damages and reduces tomato yields by 80-100%, causing significant economic damage. Insect control is difficult, as it practically does not respond to insecticides and becomes addictive extremely quickly.
