The feeling of loneliness is not always related only to life circumstances, in some cases it can indicate diseases. Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, a neurologist, Candidate of medical Sciences, and expert at the Hemotest laboratory, told Izvestia about this on March 26, the International Day of Loneliness.

According to the expert, loneliness can be a natural reaction to social isolation. It includes situations when a person lives alone, rarely communicates with loved ones and does not participate in collective activities. However, this condition often occurs in people with preserved social ties.

The expert explained that loneliness often accompanies depressive disorders. In such cases, a person loses interest in their usual life, including communication, which is associated with a malfunction of neurotransmitters. This leads to a decrease in energy, motivation, and emotional engagement.

Similar feelings can occur with anxiety disorders. In this case, the person avoids contact due to internal tension, fear of evaluation, or discomfort in communication. Over time, this can lead to real social isolation.

"Loneliness is also characteristic of some neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. In the early stages of the disease, as long as criticism persists, such patients feel that they no longer understand others, it becomes more difficult for them to navigate a conversation, memorize information or maintain a dialogue," the doctor said.

Separately, Demyanovskaya identified conditions associated with overwork. With asthenia, a person strives for solitude to recover, but in this case the isolation is temporary and is not accompanied by a pronounced sense of loneliness. In addition, people with autism spectrum disorders may experience similar sensations.

The expert stressed that it is important to distinguish between solitude and loneliness. The need to limit communication is not a pathology in itself and can be a way of recovery. The reason for contacting a specialist is a situation where a feeling of loneliness is accompanied by anxiety, depressed mood, decreased activity or memory impairment.

"If a person starts complaining about loneliness, blandness and futility of life, refuses to engage in activities that used to bring pleasure, you should pay attention to this condition," concluded Demyanovskaya.

Olesya Tolstukhina, a clinical psychologist at the Doctor Nearby medical technology company, said on March 23 that theomania — the "god complex" — is not a medical diagnosis, but is a psychological feature associated with a sense of one's own exclusivity. Unlike healthy confidence, which makes mistakes and relies on experience, in this state a person does not recognize boundaries and hardly perceives feedback.
