- Le Pen announced the protection of Hungary's interests by blocking the EU loan to Ukraine
The leader of the parliamentary faction of the French right-wing National Unification party, Marine Le Pen, said on March 23 that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, by blocking a loan from the European Union (EU) to Ukraine, stands up for the interests of his country.
"By vetoing the EU loan to Ukraine in the amount of €90 billion, Viktor Orban defends the interests of his country," she wrote on Twitter.
According to the politician, she cannot blame the Hungarian authorities for these actions.
The Politico newspaper reported on March 21 that the EU is preparing to sue if Orban continues to obstruct the allocation of a loan to Kiev. According to the publication, at the meeting of EU leaders scheduled for April 23-24 in Cyprus, possible measures to influence Budapest will be discussed. The options include freezing additional funding, filing a lawsuit against Hungary in the European Court of Justice, and imposing fines.
Orban said on March 19 that Hungary would not support a single EU decision, which could potentially be useful for Ukraine, as long as this country blocks oil supplies. He added that there is no other way out, just like Budapest's willingness to compromise in this situation.
