Former French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin has died at the age of 88. This was reported by the AFP news agency on March 23.

"Former Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin died on Sunday at the age of 88," the agency's Telegram channel said.

Jospin headed the French government from 1997 to 2002 under President Jacques Chirac. Under his leadership, the Cabinet of Ministers implemented a set of socio-economic reforms, the most significant of which was the legislative reduction of the working week from 39 to 35 hours while maintaining the same wage level.

From 1988 to 1992, Jospin served as Minister of Education of France, where he initiated the reform of the school system. After temporarily retiring from business, he returned to big-time politics in 1995 as a presidential candidate, but lost the election to Chirac.

In 2002, the politician again ran for president of the country, but was defeated, after which he announced his retirement from politics. In 2012, he partially returned to public affairs, having been appointed to the Constitutional Council of France, where he specialized in constitutional control issues.
