Pricking the ice: Kamchatka and Perm Krai became the most "slippery" regions in winter
Kamchatka, Perm Krai and Arkhangelsk Region became the leading regions in the number of winter injuries. In total, there are 12 regions in the top, including the southern Krasnodar Territory. Most often, people went to the doctors because of falls on slippery sidewalks, snow and ice coming off roofs. The shortage of personnel in the housing and communal services sector has become one of the reasons for the injury of Russians in these regions, experts said. The problem also lies in the condition of the apartment buildings of the old foundation. For more information, see the Izvestia article.
Where Russians were most often injured
12 Russian regions have become the most traumatic this winter, insurance companies told Izvestia. Most of the injuries were recorded in the Kamchatka and Perm territories, as well as in the Arkhangelsk region, AlfaStrakhovanie told the publication. The Krasnodar Territory, Murmansk, Sverdlovsk regions, St. Petersburg, Moscow and the Moscow region are also among the top dangerous regions.
The vast majority of injuries — 61% — are related to ice. At the same time, in St. Petersburg, residents were most often injured due to the descent of ice and falling icicles.
— The peak of appeals occurred in January, when the number of applications for injuries sustained on the street turned out to be 18% higher than the monthly average of the season, — the company added.
According to RESO-Garantia statistics, residents of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, as well as insured persons from Moscow, Perm and Rostov-on-Don, most often come to them with winter injuries.
Fractures turned out to be the leaders among injuries — they occurred in every second insured event, and the hands and fingers were especially often affected, the press service of Consent reported.
"Sprains of ligaments are in second place in terms of prevalence, mainly of the ankle joint, and bruises and various wounds complete the top three," they said.
Most often in winter, people apply to an insurance company for accident protection policies in connection with bruises and fractures of their hands, confirmed Elena Kosheleva, director of Sberbank Insurance projects.
— Basically, the cause of such injuries are falls on ice while skating or collisions during the descent from the slide on tubing, — she said.
According to Absolut Insurance, falls on slippery roads account for a relatively small proportion of the complaints.
—Limb fractures, as well as bruises and sprains, are most often recorded," Natalia Tylina, head of the company's loss settlement department for accident and travel insurance policies, told Izvestia.
According to Nikolai Vorony, head of the Ingosstrakh Personal and Property Insurance Claims Settlement Department, the winter period is also characterized by an abundance of injuries caused by pyrotechnic explosions.
Why are these regions injury-prone
In winter, the number of street injuries traditionally increases, said Denis Titov, Director of the AlfaStrakhovanie Department of Property Insurance for Individuals.
"Falls on ice are more common in the northern regions, and snowfall and high load on pedestrian infrastructure play a significant role in large cities," he said.
The main causes of injury to people in 12 regions were climatic features and a shortage of personnel in housing and communal services, as well as the poor condition of some apartment buildings of the old foundation, said Konstantin Krokhin, a member of the Committee on Entrepreneurship in the housing and Communal Services sector of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation.
—In Kamchatka, the housing and communal services system is understaffed with enough specialists to timely monitor the maintenance of apartment buildings," he told Izvestia.
According to him, there are also not enough janitors in Moscow. In addition, there is a shortage of industrial climbers, and only these specialists have the right to clean roofs.
— The lack of a sufficient number of vehicles and janitors due to financing does not allow timely and competent cleaning of roads, — the expert explained the problem of slippery streets. — The work that 10 people should do is done by two. It is clear that they are not in time.
In St. Petersburg, for example, there are many old buildings with pitched roofs, that is, with a pronounced slope, and ledges. Such constructions are convenient for forming icicles, Konstantin Krokhin explained. According to him, this could have caused increased injuries in the region.
"The architecture of St. Petersburg contributes to the mass education of such phenomena," he said. — It is impossible for a simple housing and communal services worker to climb to knock down icicles. This should be a specialist trained to work at altitude. The shortage of such personnel causes untimely cleaning of roofs.
Svetlana Razvorotneva also mentioned the problem with roofs in historical buildings in St. Petersburg.
— Icicles have always been a problem in St. Petersburg. So far, they have not come up with some universal way to clean the roof without access to the roof," she said.
People suffer from ice due to their own inattention, says Anatoly Tsygankov, head of the department of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia. According to him, the Hydrometeorological Center and the Ministry of Emergency Situations warn on their websites about the formation of the phenomenon.
How to avoid injury
In winter, you need to forget about leather soles and high heels, said Abdula Gadzhimuradov, chief specialist of the Be Healthy clinic network in the field of traumatology and orthopedics.
— Shoes must have a raised tread and be made of materials that do not harden in the cold. If it slips, you can apply a "preventative" rubber pad to the sole in the workshop. In icy conditions, it is worth using special ice floes — removable studded pads — they really work," he explained to Izvestia.
In addition, you need to be able to walk properly on ice, added general practitioner Andrey Kondrakhin.
— You can fall even with deicing shoes. If it is not possible to walk along the edge where the snow is trampled, then you need to shuffle on the ice, not take long steps," he said. — The knees should be bent.
The feet should be placed almost parallel, and the hands should be free, not in pockets, Abdula Gadzhimuradov added.
It's better to fall on your side, Andrei Kondrakhin advised. In this case, there will be less damage. When falling, you need to press your chin to your chest, and your arms bent at the elbows to your sides, Abdula Gadzhimuradov added.
— After a fall, you should never get up abruptly. We need to lie down for a while, come to our senses, move our arms and legs, and see if there are any injuries," Andrei Kondrakhin said.
If the victim decides to stand up, then you do not need to do it with a straight back from a sitting position.: first on all fours, then get up, resting your hands on the knee of your good leg, Abdula Gadzhimuradov added.
According to him, people are more likely to fall due to haste and distractions, such as gadgets. This leads to fractures of the ankles, radius, and sprains.
— To protect yourself, you need to slow down and put your phone in your pocket while crossing a slippery area, — said the doctor.
The elderly are particularly at risk, as their bone density decreases due to age: bones become more fragile, Abdula Gadzhimuradov emphasized. When they fall, they risk fractures of the femoral neck, humerus and compression fractures of the spine.
