The expert assessed the new round of negotiations between the United States and Belarus

Due to its foreign policy mistakes, the United States is very interested in improving relations with Russia and Belarus. This was stated by MGIMO Professor, Doctor of Political Sciences Kirill Koktysh in an interview with Izvestia.

"Because of the adventure in the Middle East, they needed Russian oil, and they lifted some of the restrictions. The same situation applies to Belarus. The administration of [US President Donald] Trump quarreled with Canada, which was the main supplier of potash fertilizers, and now they are looking for a replacement, and in this regard they are establishing ties with Minsk. At the same time, they need to solve the issue urgently, the same potassium is needed for sowing," the expert explained.

He stressed that what is happening can only be welcomed, because in such complicated conditions, normalization of international relations is taking place.

There have been improvements in relations between the United States and Belarus. On March 19, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko received U.S. Special Envoy John Cole in Minsk. Following the talks, Trump's representative announced the lifting of sanctions against two Belarusian banks, the country's Ministry of Finance, as well as producers of potash fertilizers. On the same day, the Belarusian leader pardoned 250 prisoners convicted under extremist articles.

On March 20, Lukashenko announced the preparation of a big deal with the United States. In addition to the work of embassies, the issues discussed include the control of nuclear materials in the framework of non-proliferation of weapons.
