- Media reports on the withdrawal of the NATO contingent from Iraq due to the sharp escalation in Iran
NATO has halted training activities in Iraq and withdrawn about 600 troops due to the escalating conflict in Iran. This was announced on March 19 by the IraqiNews portal.
"The alliance's decision to suspend the NATO mission in Iraq was made after the escalation of the crisis caused by the US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which raised serious concerns about the safety of foreign soldiers stationed in Iraq. NATO has stopped training activities and withdrawn about 600 troops from the country," the publication says.
The publication notes that although NATO positions these actions as preventive, the suspension of operations shows how quickly the escalation of the conflict in Iran is changing the security situation in Iraq and throughout the region.
The Wall Street Journal reported on March 20 that the United States may try to seize several islands off the southern coast of Iran in order to open the Strait of Hormuz. It is noted that the 31st Marine Expeditionary Force, numbering about 2.2 thousand infantrymen, was sent to the region of the United States.
The Times newspaper also reported on March 19 that Britain had sent a small team of military planners to the United States to develop a strategy for opening the Strait of Hormuz.
