The lawyer warned about the danger of emotional schemes of scammers
Fraud schemes based on emotional pressure and abuse of trust remain among the most common, but victims can recover funds through the courts. Sofya Lukinova, head of the Legal department of VMT Consult, informed Izvestia about this on March 17.
"The money can be returned through the court if the fraud is proven," the expert emphasized.
According to her, the key element is the collection of evidence. Recordings of conversations where it is clearly audible who is contacting and for what purpose, as well as video recordings from surveillance cameras in public places, shops or entrances can be used as confirmations. An additional role is played by the testimony of witnesses who happened to be nearby at the time of the transfer of money, as well as any information about the recipient of funds and the method of transfer, whether it is a bank card, account or electronic wallet.
"If you have witnessed a situation in which, as it seems to you, a fraudster is extorting money under the guise of a good deed, we do not recommend intervening directly, it can be dangerous. Conflict can escalate into physical damage to the body and property. It is also possible that there are accomplices "on the lookout" nearby. It is necessary to try to record what is happening in order to have evidence of fraud. It is more effective to contact the police immediately and tell them about the incident," the lawyer explained.
If the money has already been transferred, the victim should immediately submit an application to begin an investigation in hot pursuit.
Lukinova added that checking the information on which the request for help is based can be difficult due to emotional pressure. Nevertheless, a person has the right to request supporting information — photos, documents, or information about a medical facility. For verification, it is recommended to contact the organization yourself using the official contacts listed on its website, rather than using phones provided by strangers. In most cases, this allows you to detect fraud at an early stage.
Evgeny Masharov, a member of the commission of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation for the public examination of draft laws and other regulations, reported on March 5 that fraudsters began extorting personal data of apartment building residents by posing as Mosenergosbyt employees in house-wide chat rooms. According to him, such employees never collect information in this way and work in accordance with Russian law.
