The adoption of the new Constitution of Kazakhstan will be an epochal event in the country's history, with the basic law coming into force on July 1, 2026. This was stated by the head of state Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, his speech at the solemn event on March 17 was published on his website.
"The adoption of the new Constitution is an epochal event. It comes into force on July 1 of this year. That is, we have time to carry out a total political and legal transformation," the Kazakh leader said, noting that the process will take the entire year 2026 and possibly continue in 2027.
Tokayev noted that Constitution Day will be celebrated on March 15. The holiday has received the status of a state holiday and will be held at the national level.
Due to the adoption of the new basic law, the legislative framework in the republic will be completely restructured. According to the President of Kazakhstan, five new constitutional laws are to be adopted, and more than 68 laws will be edited and brought into line with the updated Constitution.
In addition, the President of the country has taken the initiative to conduct a criminal amnesty in Kazakhstan. He stressed that this is a matter of humanism and justice, but did not specify the terms and categories of citizens who may fall under it.
The adoption of the new Constitution was approved by more than 87% of those who voted. A total of 9,127,192 people took part in the voting. Oleg Kopylov, head of the mission of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Deputy Secretary General of the SCO, said that the referendum in Kazakhstan met the requirements of the legislation, and no violations were recorded.
On March 16, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Tokayev on the successful holding of the referendum on the new Constitution of the country.
