- The White House allowed the postponement of Trump's visit to China due to the operation in Iran
US President Donald Trump may postpone his visit to China scheduled for late March or early April due to the ongoing war in Iran. This was announced on March 16 by White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt.
"Given that we are currently fighting a war in Iran, I do not think that the meeting itself is under threat, but it is possible that it may be postponed. Negotiations are currently underway at the leadership level, and if the trip is postponed, we will announce new dates as soon as possible," she said on Fox News.
Leavitt added that Trump's main task at the moment is "to ensure the success of Operation Epic Fury, which the United States is conducting in Iran. According to her, the American president is busy with this "24/7 in the White House, not at home."
The White House spokeswoman also said that the United States is negotiating with NATO allies and partners in the Arab world, pushing them to work together to open the Strait of Hormuz.
At the same time, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that Trump's trip could be postponed due to "logistics", as the American leader wants to stay in Washington and coordinate military actions.
"Traveling abroad at such a time may not be optimal. <...> It would be a decision that the president would make as commander—in-chief: stay in the White House or stay in the United States while this war is going on," CNN quoted him as saying.
On March 15, Trump himself stated in an interview with the Financial Times (FT) that his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping could be postponed until Beijing helps unblock the Strait of Hormuz. He called such actions "highly appropriate," since China is "the main beneficiary of the strait."
On March 14, Trump appealed to countries that depend on oil supplied through the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the safety of this transport route. In addition, he noted that a number of countries have plans to send warships to ensure the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also called on Britain, China, South Korea, France and Japan to support such an effort.
A representative of the central headquarters of the Iranian Armed Forces, Khatam al-Anbiya, said on March 15 that Iran was ready to use any methods, including monitoring the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, to force the enemy to surrender.
Die Welt newspaper reported on March 15 that the Iranian leadership reacted ironically to Trump's call for countries that receive oil through the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the safety of this important trade route.
