Szijjarto announced Kiev's cancellation of consultations on the Druzhba oil pipeline
At the last moment, Ukraine canceled trilateral consultations with the energy ministers of Hungary and Slovakia on the operation of the Druzhba oil pipeline. This was announced on March 16 by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto.
"Trilateral consultations with the Ministers of Energy of Slovakia and Ukraine were scheduled for today, but the Ukrainian side eventually refused to participate," Szijjarto wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
He stressed that this was preceded by the work of the Hungarian delegation of the Ministry of Energy, which spent three and a half days in Kiev trying to establish a dialogue. In addition, all requests for a meeting were rejected, and the European Union (EU) inspectors are also not allowed to visit the facility.
According to the Foreign Minister, there are only political reasons behind Ukraine's refusal to resume the work of Druzhba, since from a technical point of view the pipeline is ready for operation.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said yesterday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would never resume oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline. According to Fico, what is happening looks like Slovakia is being punished for its peaceful position and lack of support for military loans for Ukraine. Fico also accused Kiev of trying to convince the EU that Friendship was inoperable.
On March 14, Fico called for giving the EU a mandate to negotiate with Russia to resolve the situation in Ukraine. He pointed out that the EC formally sided with Bratislava in the situation with Kiev stopping oil pumping through the Druzhba pipeline, but it does not exert enough pressure on Zelensky to restore supplies.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also announced the creation of a commission on the Druzhba oil pipeline with Bratislava.
