The new power unit of Kursk NPP-2 was brought to 100% capacity
The new power unit of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant – 2 (NPP-2) has been brought to 100% of its rated capacity. This was announced on March 16 by the Rosatom State Corporation.
"The first power unit of the second stage is at the stage of pilot operation," the Telegram channel said in a statement.
It is noted that since the first synchronization with the power grid in December 2025, specialists have consistently mastered the reactor plant's capacity — from 40% to 100%. During this time, the unit has produced about 570 million kWh of electricity.
Alexander Uvakin, Director of the Kursk NPP, explained that at each stage a set of tests was carried out to verify that the equipment's operating parameters corresponded to the design values.
"At 100% capacity, we will once again investigate the neutron-physical characteristics of the core, study the behavior of the reactor plant in various scenario conditions, test the in—reactor control systems, test the complete de-energization of the unit, check the effectiveness of biological protection, as well as the radiation situation at the nuclear power plant," he said.
On January 1, it became known that the new power unit No. 1 of Kursk NPP-2 began operation and was connected to the unified energy system of the Russian Federation. It was clarified that the power unit became the first facility in the framework of the latest VVER-TOI project. In addition, it has become the most powerful of the company's power units.
