Kazakh citizens residing in Russia have begun voting in a referendum on the new constitution of the republic. This was announced on March 15 by the press service of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry.
"Citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan residing in Russia are voting today in a referendum on the adoption of a new constitution of the country. A section at the Embassy of Kazakhstan has been opened in Moscow," the agency said in a Telegram channel message.
In addition to Moscow, polling stations are open at consulates General in St. Petersburg, Kazan, Astrakhan and Omsk. In total, voting takes place in more than 30 countries around the world. The last site to open is in San Francisco.
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree on holding a referendum on February 15. Citizens will have to answer the question about the adoption of the draft new constitution, published on February 12. It is expected that more than 12 million people will vote at 10,413 polling stations.
Prior to that, it was reported that the turnout for voting on constitutional amendments in Kazakhstan in the first three hours was 19.21%. The lowest turnout was recorded in Alma Ata and amounted to 9.54%, while the highest was in the Karaganda region, where 26.64% of voters voted.
Voting for the adoption of a new constitution started in Kazakhstan on March 15. Citizens over the age of 18 who are included in the voter lists have the right to vote in the country.
The text of the new constitution of Kazakhstan was published on February 12 for citizens' review in the newspaper Egemen Kazakstan. It was noted that if the new basic law is adopted, it will enter into force on July 1, 2026.
