The State Duma told about a new fraudulent scheme with loans
Scammers have started using a new method of deception, sending fake messages about the status of the loan in order to lure people to malicious sites. This was announced on March 15 by Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy and Communications, as well as coordinator of the Digital Russia project from the United Russia party.
According to Nilov, users receive text messages or instant messengers with texts like "the status of your loan has been updated" and a link to go to. Fraudsters rely on the surprise effect: even if a person has never applied for a loan, such notifications can cause alarm and prompt them to urgently check the information.
The MP called such messages a classic example of a phishing attack. Scammers use short, disturbing phrases to make a person act impulsively. In response to a message about the allegedly changed status of a loan or debt, the recipient does not hesitate to click on the link to sort out the situation.
"After clicking through, the user usually ends up on a fake website that can outwardly copy the pages of banks or microfinance organizations. They ask him to enter his phone number, passport details, bank card details, or an SMS code. In some cases, the link may also lead to downloading a malicious file," Nemkin said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to the MP, these phishing messages are being sent en masse. Scammers expect that among the thousands of recipients there will be those who have recently applied for a loan or who are simply afraid of possible financial problems.
On March 14, employees of the cybercrime department of the Russian Interior Ministry revealed a new scheme to deceive users of the Telegram messenger. Attackers steal data using the "secret chat" function.
