The US decision to deploy additional troops in the form of 5,000 Marines in the Middle East suggests that the war plan for Iran has failed. This opinion was expressed on March 14 by political scientist and journalist Garland Nixon in an interview with Izvestia.

Nixon stressed that the public is beginning to realize the reality of the situation and has little faith that the United States is in control of the situation. He also noted that the deployment of additional forces would be cautious and probably almost secret, as otherwise Iran could easily attack them. In his opinion, the United States is trying to bring in reinforcements due to the fact that military bases, for example, in Iraq, have been attacked by local armed groups, which may be one of the reasons for the deployment of ground forces to strengthen protection.

The political scientist added that there is still little information about which units are being sent to the region and suggested that these could be anti-drone units, as the United States is experiencing difficulties with drones. In addition, Marines can be used to work with the Navy, rather than for ground operations. Nixon believes that the 5,000 Marines with whom they are going to intervene in the conflict are not enough to carry out a ground invasion, given the scale of Tehran's armed forces.

"I do not believe that 5,000 Marines will be used for some kind of ground invasion. It just doesn't make sense. 5,000 Marines are very, very few, and they would not be enough to conduct some kind of ground operation where they would be used to attack a ground target or something similar," the expert said.

The journalist clarified that the statements of Washington and Tel Aviv now look unconvincing and even desperate, since the reality of what is happening is obvious to everyone. He recalled the frequent occurrence of reports of accidents with American ships and aircraft: the Iranians claim that they struck, and the United States explains this by internal problems, such as a fire in the laundry room or an engine malfunction.

"Everyone is watching and seeing events that usually occur during a conflict: planes are shot down, ships are hit by missiles. But, in my opinion, the administration of [the head of the Donald White House] Trump and the US government now realize that they don't have much support for this conflict internally. And if they admit that serious problems are happening and that they may be losing the war, it will lead to serious political consequences," Nixon concluded.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on March 13 that Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth approved sending additional marine forces to the Middle East, including an expeditionary force, which usually includes several warships and 5,000 fighters. According to the newspaper's sources, some of the Marines have already arrived in the Middle East.

Fox News reported on March 13 that the United States plans to launch a "strong strike" against Iran over the next week. According to Trump, Washington has already caused significant damage to Tehran, which "will take years to recover."
