The Trump administration is going to close the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which has made significant contributions to scientific discoveries in the field of weather and climate research. This was reported on March 13 by The New York Times.

"The administration of [US President Donald] Trump is considering proposals to liquidate one of the world's leading climate and weather research laboratories, transfer its work to universities and private companies, seize its aircraft and sell its property in Boulder, Colorado," the material says.

According to the publication, the National Center for Atmospheric Research has been under the close attention of the Trump administration for several months. Russell Vaught, director of the White House Budget Office, called the center "one of the largest sources of climate panic in the country."

According to The New York Times, the laboratory's research aircraft and its sophisticated computer models of Earth's atmosphere and oceans are "widely used to predict weather events and natural disasters."

Scientists argue that the decision to close the center will weaken research crucial to understanding the atmosphere, space and oceans, air pollution and climate change.

The staff of the center includes about 830 employees.

On March 3, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation added the University of California at Berkeley from the USA to the list of organizations whose activities are considered undesirable in Russia. The expanded list also includes the Center for Independent Social Research (Germany), the European Network for the Judicial Protection of Prisoners' Rights (France) and the Russian-American Association of Scientists (USA).
