The psychologist explained the reasons for the spring exacerbation in humans
The causes of the spring exacerbation are changes in the environment — the lengthening of daylight hours, fluctuations in temperature and atmospheric pressure. Daria Yausheva, a psychologist at the Sberbank Health medical company, told Izvestia about this on March 13.
"Spring exacerbation" is not a medical term, but a household name for a mild form of SAD, a seasonal affective disorder that manifests itself with recurring episodes of depression due to the changing seasons," Yausheva said.
The causes of this condition are changes in the environment — an increase in daylight hours, fluctuations in temperature and atmospheric pressure. This affects the body's biorhythms and disrupts the production of the hormones serotonin and melatonin, which in turn affects mood and sleep quality.
Symptoms of SAD include depressed mood, decreased concentration, drowsiness, irritability, anxiety, and increased fatigue. A person may lose interest in their usual activities and limit social contacts. However, the presence of such symptoms does not always indicate seasonal affective disorder: the diagnosis can only be made by a psychiatrist.
"To alleviate the manifestations of seasonal affective disorder, it is necessary to engage in regular physical activity, observe sleep and rest patterns, and devote time to activities that improve mood. This can be, for example, a hobby, reading or listening to your favorite music. In addition, it is important to eat a balanced diet, paying special attention to a sufficient amount of protein in the diet, since the amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine contained in it serve as the basis for the production of serotonin," said Yausheva.
In addition, as the expert noted, psychotherapy can be an effective way to relieve symptoms. Depending on the situation, specialists can choose cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and responsibility therapy, or dialectical behavioral therapy, which help regulate emotional state.
"If you have to deal with seasonal affective disorder, you should be patient and not expect an instant improvement in mood. If independent attempts to cope with this condition turn out to be ineffective and well-being worsens, for example, anxiety increases, it is recommended to consult a psychologist. This can be done not only in person, but also with the help of telemedicine services," concluded the psychologist.
Olga Umanova, a clinical psychologist at the Be Healthy Harmony and Health Center, said on March 13 that chronic lack of sleep due to a partner seriously harms mental and physical health. According to the expert, when a person systematically does not get enough sleep, the level of cortisol, the stress hormone, increases. This causes irritability, reduces the ability to empathize, and impairs cognitive function, which in turn inevitably affects the quality of relationships and life in general.
