The Royal Court of Norway has informed about the state of health of Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway. The wife of Crown Prince Haakon's chronic lung disease has worsened, and doctors have begun preparations to assess the possibility of a transplant. All the details are in the Izvestia article.

Health status and possible transplantation

The royal palace said that the 52-year-old Crown Princess's condition remains difficult. Due to a chronic illness, she has not participated in official events since the end of January, and her work schedule for the coming weeks has been completely released.

Guri Varpe, Communications Manager at the Royal Court, noted that the princess' condition requires a special treatment and recovery regime.

"As you know, the Crown Princess has been diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis. Recently, there has been a clear deterioration in her condition, and preparations have begun to assess the possibility of lung transplantation," she said.

According to Warpe, the princess needs more time for rest, rehabilitation and special training, so her official schedule has been adapted to her health condition.

Diagnosis and control of the disease

The fact that Mette-Marit was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis became known in 2018. This is a chronic disease in which scars form in the tissues of the lungs, which makes it more difficult for organs to supply oxygen to the body. In the fall of 2025, the princess underwent a course of pulmonary rehabilitation. Then she admitted to reporters that it was becoming more difficult for her to cope with the daily workload.

"I need a little more help now than before to cope with ordinary life," she noted.

The last official event of the princess was a visit to the library in Fredrikstad on January 28 with her husband, Crown Prince Haakon.

The trial of the Princess' son

The difficulties with Mette-Marit's health coincided with a difficult period for the Norwegian royal family. The trial of her eldest son, Marius Borg Heiby, became the focus of attention.

The 29-year—old Heibi is the son of a princess from a relationship to marriage with the Crown Prince. He is not a member of the royal family and does not occupy a place in the line of succession. In early February, he appeared in court in Oslo on 38 charges, including several counts of rape. The trial is expected to last until mid-March.

The royal palace stressed that Mette-Marit and her husband do not plan to attend court sessions and will not comment on the proceedings.

Role in the royal family

Mette-Marit became the wife of Crown Prince Haakon in 2001. Their marriage caused a wide public outcry, as the future princess did not belong to an aristocratic environment and was already raising a child from a previous relationship.

Today, the couple has two children together, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus. Despite her health problems, Mette-Marit continued to actively participate in the country's public life and charitable initiatives.

The royal palace emphasizes that now the princess needs to focus on treatment and recovery. A possible lung transplant could be the next step in the fight against her disease.
