The somnologist named the main symptoms of respiratory arrest during sleep
Episodes of respiratory arrest during sleep can occur to one degree or another in a significant part of people, but many do not attach importance to this. Alexey Melekhin, Candidate of Psychological Sciences, Associate Professor, Professor of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, clinical psychologist and member of the Association of Apnologists of Russia, told Izvestia about this.
"To one degree or another, almost every one of us has respiratory arrest during sleep. Every second or third person has such episodes. It's another matter in what form they manifest themselves — mild, moderate or severe," the specialist explained.
The expert noted that the predisposition to such disorders is related to the characteristics of the body.
"We are all predisposed to snoring and respiratory arrest during sleep due to anatomical features, nervous system features, endocrine and neurological status, as well as how sleep itself works," the specialist said.
According to him, one of the most common signs of sleep apnea is feeling tired in the morning.
"People often ignore morning fatigue, irritability, tearfulness, redness of the eyes, and swelling. There may be dryness in the nose, coughing or coughing, headaches and a feeling of stale after sleep," Melekhin explained.
He noted that sleep apnea directly affects the structure of sleep and the body's recovery process.
"The very symptom of sleep apnea disrupts the structure of sleep. Sleep becomes fragmented, its quality changes, a person does not rest, there is a strain on the cardiovascular and nervous systems," the specialist said.
The expert also noted that modern approaches to the treatment of sleep apnea are becoming more personalized.
"Every apnea patient has their own profile. We are currently identifying different patient phenotypes, depending on their mental, cognitive, physical, and endocrine-neurological characteristics. This allows us to more accurately determine the type of disorder and select targeted treatment," Melekhin emphasized.
According to the specialist, timely diagnosis and medical treatment can significantly reduce the risk of complications and improve sleep quality and overall health.
