The expert appreciated the adaptation of Russian hotels to Chinese tourists
The Russian hotel business has radically changed its approach to working with guests from China, overcoming cross-cultural differences and creating an environment comfortable for Asian travelers. Alexander Preobrazhensky, senior lecturer at the Department of Management in the Hospitality Industry at the Presidential Academy (RANEPA), told Izvestia about this.
According to him, if a few years ago cultural differences caused difficulties, today the industry demonstrates high adaptability. Hoteliers quickly realized the need for Chinese tourists in a familiar environment, which led to the emergence of hotels specializing in the reception of guests from China.
"First of all, it is worth noting that hoteliers quickly realized that the Chinese prefer to live apart, in their own environment, and hotels specializing in welcoming Chinese tourists appeared. In such hotels, you will see navigation in Chinese, there are more spittoons, furniture that is standard for Asian countries has appeared, and the hotel's cuisine has mastered culinary recipes familiar to a particular region of China," the expert noted.
Preobrazhensky stressed that adaptation is not limited to the material and technical base. Trainings are regularly conducted for hotel staff and methodological manuals are being developed aimed at overcoming intercultural barriers, which makes it possible to effectively solve possible problematic situations.
At the same time, Chinese tourists in Russia opt for mid-range and above-average hotels. According to Preobrazhensky, referring to data from the Ostrovok booking service, the most popular hotels among guests from China are 4-star hotels (37% of tourists choose them) and 3-star hotels (26%). Luxury hotels, on the contrary, accept only 7% of the flow.
"These statistics clearly show that the hotel industry needs to focus on the mass tourist from this country and, accordingly, offer them services and services of a mass nature rather than elite," the expert concludes.
According to Preobrazhensky, the success of adapting hotels to the tourist flow from China can be judged by reviews on Chinese travel sites: 82% of tourists give positive ratings, while they recommend Russian hotels to their compatriots precisely for the atmosphere that hoteliers create for Chinese residents.
