Zakharova called the issue of Ukraine an excuse for the EU's unprecedented militarization.

The issue of the conflict in Ukraine is, for representatives of the European Union (EU) member states, the only justification for the unprecedented militarization of the alliance in front of the citizens of their states. This was announced on March 13 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"This is (the topic of Ukraine. It is the only opportunity to justify to an internal audience unprecedented political and financial investments in the accelerated militarization of Europe to the detriment of the well—being of ordinary European citizens, as well as the stagnation of the European economy as a result of the anti-Russian sanctions spiral and the failed socio—economic policies of the current EU leadership," she said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Zakharova clarified that many European politicians have invested almost all of their political capital in the project to support Kiev, and now they are afraid of "playing out" the situation, as they realize that this step may now cost them their careers.

Zakharova noted on the same day that Brussels was betting on escalation in Ukraine, hoping that the conflict would distract attention from the EU's failures in other directions. Speaking about this, she drew attention to the suppression by the European Commission (EC) of any attempts at a settlement.

On March 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin also pointed out the strange relationship between Ukraine and the EU. He stated that in them "the tail is wagging the dog." At the same time, the Russian leader pointed out the danger of financing Kiev from European countries, as such actions worsen the position of the alliance's member countries in the fuel market.

On March 7, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the Ukrainian authorities only know how to blackmail and demand, and are not ready to talk about compromises.
