- The expert called a meteoroid flare over the Black Sea coast a common occurrence.
The destruction of a small meteoroid (an asteroid with a diameter of tens of cm to several meters) over the Black Sea coast of Russia is a common natural phenomenon. Such space objects regularly enter the Earth's atmosphere, but it is not always possible to notice their flight. Honorary Doctor of Sciences, educator and teacher Sergey Chumakov told Izvestia about this on March 13.
"A significant part of these fireballs fly over the oceans, since most of the Earth's surface is covered with water. That is why such phenomena often go unnoticed. At the same time, the probability of observing a car is higher in densely populated regions: the larger the territory and the number of people, the higher the chance that someone will record an unusual phenomenon. However, such an event remains rare for a single city or locality," the expert explained.
According to him, meteorites, small fragments of cosmic bodies, sometimes fall to Earth after the destruction of meteoroids. They may contain rare and precious metals, which has led to the emergence of an entire industry for the search and sale of such finds. However, the main value of meteorites lies in their scientific significance. Chumakov clarified that asteroids are very ancient and consist of the substance of the primary gas and dust cloud from which the planets of the Solar System were formed. Studying them helps scientists explore the early stages of space development.
The expert stressed that meteoroids tens of centimeters in size, similar to the object that collapsed over the Black Sea coast, do not pose a danger to people and infrastructure. Only larger bodies with a diameter of several meters or more can pose a potential threat. If such an object has a high density and enters the atmosphere at a high angle and at high speed, the consequences of its destruction can be comparable to events such as the Chelyabinsk meteorite fall in 2013.
At the same time, one of the main problems remains the limited possibilities for detecting small asteroids, the Doctor of Sciences added. Ground-based observatories are hampered by light pollution, as well as a large number of satellites in orbit. As a solution, scientists are considering the creation of orbital telescopes that could operate near the orbits of Mars and Venus. Such systems would make it possible to detect potentially dangerous space objects earlier and reduce the risk of their unexpected appearance near the Earth.
On March 12, the IKI RAS reported that a small meteorite had presumably collapsed near the Black Sea coast. Presumably, the size of the cosmic body could be up to half a meter, but a possible man-made origin of the object has not been ruled out. It is noted that the recordings from the street surveillance cameras that recorded the fall have not yet been linked to specific coordinates.
