Biologist warned about the risk of amputation and HIV infection due to manicure
It is dangerous to allow cuts during a manicure or pedicure, because even the smallest of them can become an entrance gate for infection. The acting dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the State University of Education, biologist Irina Lyalina, told about this on Thursday, March 12.
According to the expert, during the procedure, the instruments often come into contact with water, skin and microbes, which increases the risk of bacteria, fungi and even viruses getting into the wounds. Lyalina explained that when infected, inflammation and purulent processes develop rapidly, she added.
"In rare but neglected cases, the purulent process can spread, causing sepsis (blood poisoning), inflammation of tendons, bone damage (phalanges), necrosis, up to amputation. Through cuts, you can also get infected with hepatitis B and C viruses, HIV and other dangerous infections, especially if the instruments are not sterile," Lyalina warned in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
The biologist emphasized that it is better to avoid injury and trust the procedure only to professionals with high-quality triple sterilization of instruments.
The day before, Oleg Abelev, PhD in Economics, Dean of the Faculty of International Finance at the All-Russian Academy of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, told the Moscow City News agency that in the next six months the cost of manicure in the capital may increase by 10-15%.
Earlier, on March 5, Ekaterina Aleko, director of the PR department of the 4K marketing agency, said that on April 30, 2026, a new national standard for manicure and pedicure services will come into force in Russia. Although the document is of a recommendatory nature, market participants already predict that following it will become an important marketing tool and, possibly, a reason for reviewing pricing policy.
According to the expert, the appearance of GOST in the beauty industry will create a new unique sales offer (USP) for salons.
The expert noted that the time limits set in the document (for example, up to 150 minutes for modeling) will not allow the craftsmen to save on the client without the risk of being accused of violating the standard. In the future, this may lead to an increase in the cost of services: more time per procedure means a higher final price. At the same time, small studios and private craftsmen will face a choice: comply with the regulations in full, which may slow down turnover and increase training costs, or risk losing consumer confidence.
In turn, the site kp.ru I conducted a survey to find out how many Russians prefer to get manicures and pedicures in beauty salons. It turned out that 32% of respondents choose professional services, according to 360.ru .
