The majority of US citizens called for an end to strikes on Iran
The number of Americans in favor of stopping strikes on Iran consistently exceeds the number of supporters of their continuation, although the level of support for the military operation has generally increased in recent weeks, a poll published on March 12 by The Washington Post newspaper showed.
According to the survey results, the majority of respondents voted in favor of ending strikes on Iran, although their number decreased to 42% compared with 47% who expressed the same position in the March 1 poll. At the same time, the number of Americans in favor of continued strikes increased by 9% over the same period, reaching 34% in the new survey. The number of undecided respondents increased from 24% to 28%.
Despite the negative attitude towards the strikes, the level of public support for the military operation as a whole has increased — 42% versus 40%. Since March 1, the number of "for" speakers has increased by 3%, while "against" has decreased by 12%.
At the same time, the majority of Americans (53%) do not believe that military action will contribute to the long-term security of the United States. The overwhelming majority (65%) still believe that the administration of US President Donald Trump has not explained the clear objectives of the military operation, and 63% consider the number of casualties among the US military to be "unacceptable", which, according to the Pentagon, amounts to seven dead and about 140 wounded.
Americans have become less tolerant of casualties in the Iranian conflict than they were at the beginning of the Iraq War two decades ago.
Glen Diesen, a professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, called the US strikes on Iran a huge historical mistake on March 2. He also called the events taking place a predictable catastrophe, when the boundaries of objectivity are blurred, and militarism is disguised as patriotism.
