Switzerland has temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran amid the escalation in the Middle East. The ambassador and staff have left Iran, the confederation's Foreign Ministry said on its Facebook page (ex. Twitter).

"In light of the war in the Middle East and the increasing security threat, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided to temporarily close the Swiss Embassy in Tehran. The ambassador and five Swiss employees left Iran today by land and are now safely outside the country," the ministry said.

It is noted that the staff will return to Tehran as soon as the situation permits. The Swiss Foreign Ministry also indicated that, in agreement with the countries concerned, Switzerland will maintain a communication channel between the United States and Iran as part of its good offices.

On March 6, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov announced the withdrawal of the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission from Iran. Baku noted that it had recalled not only the staff of the embassy in Tehran, but also the Consulate General in Tabriz.
