Strengthening the position of the Russian language plays an important role in preserving cultural and civilizational diversity, as well as in shaping a more just and multipolar world order. This was stated on March 11 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during the first ministerial conference of the International Organization for the Russian Language (UNESCO).

"Strengthening the position of the Russian language in the world is, without exaggeration, the key to preserving the cultural and civilizational diversity of the planet, an important contribution to the formation of a more just, multipolar world order," the minister said.

He noted that the multifaceted and rich Russian language is "a common precious asset." In addition, it is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, including the digital space, as it ranks second after English in terms of the number of Internet sites and social media channels.

"Russian is the official or working language of a number of international organizations, including the United Nations. Its creative role in bringing the peoples of the Eurasian space closer together, deepening creative, scientific, and academic exchanges is great," Lavrov said.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, noted on the same day that the Russian language ranks fifth in the world in terms of prevalence, so all statements about the abolition of Russian culture are "common loudmouthed." The diplomat stressed that attempts to oppress and ban the Russian language, which are being undertaken by some Western countries, are futile.
