In March, when the weather is clear, several bright astronomical objects can be seen in the evening sky, including Sirius, the stars of the constellation Orion and the planet Jupiter. Honorary Doctor of Sciences, lecturer Sergey Chumakov told Izvestia about this on March 10.

"Despite the fact that many consider March to be the ideal time to observe various astronomical objects, this is not entirely true — in the first month of spring, the Sun sets later and later, and many planets set against the background of a bright sky," he noted.

According to the expert, more favorable conditions for astronomical observations usually develop in late January and early February, when it gets dark earlier and there is much more time for observations. Although the air sometimes becomes more transparent in March, many "winter" astronomical objects are already located low above the horizon.

Chumakov explained that if the weather is right, Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, can be seen in the southwestern part of the sky. Some stars from the constellation Orion, including Betelgeuse and Rigel, also remain visible. Above Orion, next to the stars Pollux and Castor, is Jupiter, the largest planet in the Solar system.

The expert added that it is better to choose places far from high-rise buildings and woodlands for observations, so that the southern and western parts of the horizon remain open.

"It is necessary to take into account the illumination created by large settlements, so that only Jupiter and Sirius can be seen in the evening sky from the center of a large city. It is best to choose suburbs or even rural areas for observations," he concluded.

On the same day, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the IKI RAS reported that a new coronal hole had formed on the Sun in recent years. It was clarified that over the past day, the geomagnetic situation remained calm, and flash activity was moderately increased. Around midnight, a C7.8 level flare occurred in the Sun, which became the most powerful since February 25.
