Orthodox Christians annually celebrate Easter, the main holiday of the church calendar, dedicated to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In 2026, the celebration falls on April 12th. Izvestia tells about the history and traditions of the holiday, and also publishes beautiful Easter greetings in prose that can be sent to relatives and friends.

Easter for Orthodox Christians in 2026

Easter is considered the main holiday of the Christian world. It is dedicated to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and symbolizes the victory of life over death, hope and spiritual renewal. This day has a special meaning for believers: it completes the strictest period of the church calendar — Lent — and is accompanied by divine services, family gatherings and centuries-old traditions.

In 2026, Orthodox Christians will celebrate Easter on April 12. Catholic Easter in the same year falls on April 5, that is, a week earlier.

The difference in dates is due to the use of different calendar systems: the Catholic Church uses the Gregorian calendar, while the Orthodox Church uses the Julian calendar when calculating church holidays.

The date of Easter is not fixed to a specific date and changes annually. It is calculated using a special system called paschal.

In the Orthodox tradition, preparations for Easter begin long before the holiday itself. Seven weeks before it, believers observe Lent, a time of spiritual purification, prayer, and dietary restrictions. The last week before Easter is called Holy Week. It is dedicated to the memory of the last days of the earthly life of Jesus Christ, his crucifixion and resurrection.

The main services are held on the night of Holy Saturday to Sunday. A solemn Easter service is held in churches, during which believers greet each other with the words "Christ is risen!" — "Truly he is risen!". These words are considered the main Easter greeting and are used for forty days after the holiday.

Easter is accompanied by many symbols and traditions, many of which were formed in ancient times. Colored eggs are considered one of the main attributes of the holiday. They symbolize new life and resurrection. According to legend, the tradition is connected with the story of Mary Magdalene, who brought an egg to the Roman Emperor Tiberius as a symbol of the Resurrection of Christ.

Beautiful Easter greeting cards for the whole family

Along with religious traditions, Easter has long been an important family holiday. On this day, it is customary to congratulate relatives and friends, visit relatives, exchange treats and warm wishes.

In the modern world, postcards, both paper and electronic, remain one of the most popular ways of greeting.

Such postcards can be sent to parents, grandparents, children, godparents, as well as friends and acquaintances. Congratulations usually contain wishes for peace, health, well-being and family warmth. Easter wishes are traditionally filled with a bright and joyful mood — they emphasize the meaning of the holiday as a symbol of hope and renewal.

Short wishes remain a common form of greeting, which can be easily sent via messengers or social networks. For example, you can wish your loved ones "bright joy, peace in the home and prosperity," "warmth, love and harmony," as well as "faith, hope and good changes."

Sending Easter cards has become a kind of modern tradition. Even if relatives are far from each other, an electronic postcard helps to preserve the feeling of a family holiday and remind loved ones of attention and care.

Izvestia has prepared Easter greetings in prose, which can be shared with family and friends.:
