- ABC News has learned about the interception by US intelligence agencies of messages for Iranian agents
The United States intercepted encrypted messages from Iran that could have been intended for so-called "sleeper agents" abroad. This was reported on March 9 by ABC News channel.
"It is possible that these transmissions were intended to activate or provide instructions to pre—positioned sleeper agents operating outside the country of origin," the material says.
According to the TV channel, the encrypted messages were probably sent over the radio after the assassination of Iran's leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and could contain instructions for Iranian agents in some Western countries. However, at the moment it is not possible to determine the content of these broadcasts.
At the same time, if the data provided turns out to be correct, then the recipients of the signals may begin to act in response to attacks on the Islamic Republic.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on the same day that the goal of the United States mission in Iran is to destroy Tehran's ability to launch missiles. He stressed that the operation is carried out with "overwhelming force and high precision." In addition, the diplomat called the Iranian government a terrorist regime.
The day before, the Council of Experts appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the new supreme leader. He was elected to this position by a unanimous decision of the Council and became the third supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
