A fine of up to five million rubles is threatened for spreading false information related to charges of committing a serious crime, as well as a fine of up to 1 million for public defamation on the Internet. This was announced on March 7 by Alexander Yakubovsky, a member of the State Duma Committee on Construction and Housing and Communal Services.

"Insults in house chats can lead to real responsibility. If such a chat is used to discuss household issues and it has a significant number of participants, the messages in it are recognized as public. Depending on the qualification of the act, fines are possible: up to 1 million rubles for public defamation, up to 5 million rubles for defamation related to accusing a person of committing a grave or especially grave crime," Yakubovsky said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
