Russian energy companies are ready to reorient gas supplies from the European direction to the markets of other countries. This was announced on March 6 by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak.

"Given the long-term growth in gas demand in general, <...> our companies are considering opportunities, without waiting for the next restrictions from Europe, to conclude new long-term contracts with our partners, to redirect part of the gas from Europe to other countries," he said.

According to him, the decision was made taking into account Europe's phase-out of Russian gas, which should be completed by January 1 next year, as well as growing demand in friendly countries.

He specified that India, Thailand, the Philippines and China are among the priority export destinations. The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that all these areas are being actively worked out.

"We plan to provide global energy markets, and first of all, those countries that are interested in Russian gas and which plan to build long—term constructive relations with us," he added.

Novak noted on March 4 that the increase in gas prices in Europe up to $700 per 1,000 cubic meters shows that everything is unstable with gas in the European Union (EU) countries. There is a shortage of gas on the European market, but Europe continues to "chop off the branches on which it sits." The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that oil prices are rising due to the reaction of world markets to events in the Middle East.

On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Russian government would be tasked with working out the country's possible withdrawal from the EU gas market. According to him, the Cabinet of Ministers, together with Russian companies, should study this issue in detail. The Head of State also stated that Europe's energy policy, in his opinion, does not meet the interests of the citizens of these countries.
