Washington traded hockey player Carlson to Anaheim for draft picks
The Washington Capitals hockey club of the National Hockey League announced the parting with long-time defenseman John Carlson, who will now become a player for the Anaheim Ducks.
Carlson played for the Washington team for about 15 consecutive seasons, but now he will go to play in California. Under the terms of the agreement, the Capitals received the right to select a player in the first round of the NHL draft in either 2026 or 2027, plus a third-round pick in the 2027 draft. If the Anaheim team does not qualify for the Stanley Cup this season, it will be able to retain the 2026 first-round pick, transferring it to next year.
The exchange for the 36-year-old Swedish defender was the first in his professional career in North America. He spent almost his entire career in Washington. From 2009-2010, he played 1,143 regular season matches for the club, thus becoming the second among all players in the club's history in terms of the number of matches played after striker Alexander Ovechkin (1,554 meetings). In total, he scored 771 points ("goal + assist"), including 166 goals and 605 assists, and the score was "+114". In the playoffs, he scored 78 points (21 goals and 57 assists) in 137 games.
Carl's highest achievement was winning the Stanley Cup with the team in 2018. The hockey player's contract is valid until the end of this season with a salary of $ 8 million annually, after which he will acquire the status of an unrestricted free agent, the Sport-Express newspaper added.
In Canada, on February 12, the NHL proposed to withdraw Ovechkin's number from circulation. He plays for the Washington Capitals at number eight.
