The state of Karnataka, which is considered the technological center of India, has banned the use of social networks by people under the age of 16, Reuters reports, citing the Chief Minister of the state Siddaramaiah.

"In order to prevent the negative consequences of the use of mobile devices by children, the use of social networks will be prohibited for persons under the age of 16," he said.

The British Financial Times newspaper reported on February 11 that the Indian authorities had amended the law on the regulation of social media and shortened the time frame in which online platforms are required to remove prohibited content on their sites.

The publication noted that the administration of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is tightening control over online content, including materials created using artificial intelligence.

The Times newspaper reported on February 16 that the UK authorities may impose a ban on the use of social networks for teenagers under the age of 16 as early as 2026. In addition, the Cabinet of Ministers intends to oblige Internet platforms to set limits on the time that minors spend in services with the function of endless scrolling of content.
