Iran postponed the appointment of a new supreme leader after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for security reasons. This was reported on March 6 by the New York Times (NYT).

"Iran has postponed the appointment of a successor to its assassinated supreme leader for security reasons," the publication said.

It is noted that the decision was made after statements by the United States and Israel that the new leader of the country could also become a target.

Mohsen Kumi, a member of the Presidium of the Council of Experts on the Leadership of Iran, said on March 5 that the process of selecting a new supreme leader of the country is at the final stage. According to him, the procedure is carried out in accordance with the Constitution and the internal regulations of the council.

The day before, The New York Times (NYT) newspaper, citing sources, reported that the son of Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei, Mojataba Khamenei, who was killed as a result of a military operation by the United States and Israel, became the main candidate for his father's post. The possible election of Mojataba Khamenei may indicate the radicalization of Iran's ruling elite, where representatives of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) are gaining more and more power, the newspaper pointed out.

At the same time, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz named the next supreme leader of Iran as an unambiguous target for elimination. He added that he had instructed the Israeli Army (IDF) to prepare for the elimination of Ali Khamenei's successor.
