Spain denied Rutte's words about mass support for strikes on Iran
Madrid has refuted the words of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that the bloc's allies massively support the US military campaign against Iran. This was announced on March 5 by the head of the Spanish Defense Ministry, Margarita Robles.
"Spain does not share his opinion," Politico newspaper quoted Robles as saying.
At the same time, she noted that the refusal to directly participate in the strikes on Tehran does not make Madrid a less significant partner for the alliance. As proof of Spain's reliability, the Minister cited examples of a real contribution to overall security.
Robles recalled that Spanish Patriot crews intercepted an Iranian missile in the sky over Turkey, and the Cristobal Colon frigate was sent to protect Cyprus from drone attacks.
In addition, the Spanish authorities officially refused to allow the United States to use its military bases to conduct operations against Iran, emphasizing the protection of state sovereignty and the principles of multilateral cooperation.
On the same day, the NATO Secretary General stated the difficulty of assessing the outcome of the US campaign against Iran. At the same time, he expressed confidence in the broad agreement that in the future Iran should not be able to pose a threat to its neighbors, Israel, the Middle East and Europe through terrorist activities.
The newspaper El Pais reported on March 2 that Spain had banned Trump from using its military bases to launch attacks on Iran. Madrid officially refused to support the US-Israeli military operation. Thus, Spain distanced itself from the position of France, Germany and the United Kingdom, which expressed their readiness for offensive actions in response to Tehran's attacks in the Persian Gulf region and Cyprus.
