Obesity has long ceased to be considered only as an aesthetic problem and has become one of the significant risk factors for cancer. Oncologist Zayana Sangadzhieva spoke about the connection between excess weight and cancer on Wednesday, March 4.

The expert explained in an interview with the Mail News that adipose tissue is an active endocrine organ. With obesity, it begins to function pathologically: chronic inflammation increases in the body, hormonal balance and metabolism are disrupted, the level of insulin and growth factors increases, and the intestinal microflora changes. All these processes create conditions favorable for the appearance and growth of tumors.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), obesity is associated with at least 13 types of cancer. The doctor noted that being overweight especially often increases the risk of colorectal cancer, breast cancer after menopause, liver, esophageal, pancreatic and endometrial cancers. Additional risk factors include abdominal obesity, long-term overweight, as well as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Sangadzhieva added that weight loss — through diet, drug therapy, or bariatric surgery — can weaken carcinogenic mechanisms and reduce the risk of developing cancer.

On March 2, oncologist Gleb Hrebtov said that bowel cancer is increasingly being diagnosed in middle-aged people and this is related to lifestyle. As the website writes kp.ru The new factors were a sedentary lifestyle due to office work, remote work and constant computer use.

On February 27, an international group of scientists conducted the largest study on the relationship between vegetarian diets and cancer. The analysis showed that avoiding meat can reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, but the effect depends on the type of tumor.

A day earlier, mammologist, oncologist, plastic surgeon, candidate of medical Sciences Eduard Mezhetsky said that obesity not only disrupts the functioning of most organs and systems in the body, but also increases the risk of breast cancer, especially during menopause, reports RT.

Nutritionist Anna Belousova told NSN what is the danger of buying ready-made food. According to her, even food-grade plastic, which is part of the packaging of dishes, contains dangerous substances that most affect the female body, because they disrupt the natural metabolism of female sex hormones. This affects the reproductive function, and can lead to cancer in combination with other factors.

In turn, dentist, chairman of the Professional Society of Dental Hygienists of Russia Oles Shevchenko said that diseases of the oral cavity in the future may become a factor in the development of cancer. According to the Moscow City News agency, we are talking about caries and periodontitis.
