A giant prominence ejected in the direction of the north pole of the star has been detected on the Sun. This was announced on March 3 at the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"The measured size of the plasma structure near the Sun was about 1 million km. This is three times more than the distance from the Earth to the Moon," the laboratory said in a message on its Telegram channel.

According to scientists, large solar prominences due to the high density of plasma and strong magnetic fields represent one of the most dangerous manifestations of space weather, but direct hits of such structures on the planet are extremely rare.

"In this case, the object, which at the end of the observation became quite similar to some kind of fantastic creature, clearly flew away from the Sun almost vertically upwards, perpendicular to the plane of the planets. The event will not be able to have any effect on the Earth or on any other planet with such a trajectory," the researchers concluded.

Massive emissions of giant prominences were observed in some periods last year, most recently in November 2025.

On February 13, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the IKI RAS reported that huge active regions and prominences had formed on the Sun, which externally turn the star into a smiley face. There was a sharp decrease in activity on the Sun caused by the movement to the far side of the star of a large group of sunspots 4366, which was located opposite the Earth in early February.
